When the new A6 was introduced in 4/97, the short time of careful evolution was over. A radical styling setting the levels both nationally and internationally, combined with very good technic have made the A6 to a feared competitor for every manufacturer who wants to participate in upper middleclass.
Everyone waited for the new S6. And now that it is done, many people stand in awe. But, honestly, why? 340hp are enough, but considering that the old S6 4.2+ already had 326hp while weighing less, it does not seem radical to me. Furthermore, I personally like the styling of the C4 better than that of the C5. And to conclude this, the C5 is not available with a 5-cylinder engine. You can choose between silent V8s or speechless V6s (and even some inline-4s). Hey, if I want to get bored, I watch TV!
But you have to say that this is not Audi's fault. The customers today want extremely silent and "clean" cars. That plastic things under the hood I detest, but it looks "clean" and is an insulation against noise.

Above a standard A6.

Below the new S6, does not look to bad, eh?

For the people who want power, but who think the S6 is "too much" there is still the possibility to switch to the A6 4.2. The V8 still has 300PS and the massively flared fenders clearly show that you have spent much money.

The model line-up of the C5, consisting of limo and Avant was broadened from model year 2001 on by the Audi Allroad quattro. It will continue the tradition of concept cars seeing production. It is an SAV, a Sport Activity Vehicle, a type of car not common in Europe. Audi's interpretation of this theme has of course quattro, adjustable ride height and nice applications made of stainless steel. The production model however is a bit more "normal": no chromed rear-view mirrors and the applications are made of aluminium. (?)
